After discussions with different airlines Douglas submitted 1939 the
draft of a comparatively large, four-engined air liner. The first flight of the
Dc-4 in February 1942 took place then however already with military
identification. In the following years the airplane acquired itself in over 1000
copies outstanding call as reliable and loadable military transport aircraft
under the designation C-54, as well as Rosinen Bomber during the air bridge
of Berlin in 1948 / 1949. After end of world war II Douglas built 79 civilian
DC-4, which were used together with many demilitarized former C-54 machines with
the airlines. Altogether 1283 copies were built.
